Expanding in Asia

In order to better support the increasing number of users in the East Asia countries, SolidCAM arranged a technical training about the new version SolidCAM2007 in Taiwan. Application engineers from SolidCAM`s resellers in Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand attended this training (see snapshot), which was focussed on High end applications like HSM and 5-axis simultaneous milling.

A recent report of the Worldbank shows the strong economic growth in the East Asia countries, which will reach about 8 percent in 2006, the fifth consecutive year of strong economic expansion. The manufacturing industry in the region contributes significanty to this growth. More new products are designed and built both for domestic and export purposes.

Consequently, the demand for manufacturing automation tools like "SolidWorks+SolidCAM" is also increasing. To satisfy the demand, SolidCAM has taken several actions to strenghten the sales and support capabilities in East Asia:

  • Constantly improve the technical skills of our resellers (see left column)
  • Hiring additional industry experts for the main countries in East Asia
  • Support the education of students in manufacturing automation
According to the Worldbank report, a main challenge in this region is to prepare the 450 million young people to become the drivers of future growth. It notes "the high and rising return to higher skills and the importance of connecting school and work". A practical example is the Mechanical Engineering Institute of the well-known Tianjin University, which just installed 30 seats SolidWorks+SolidCAM (see article below).

  • Tianjin University decides for SolidCAM
  • The Tianjin University is a national university under the direct administration of the Ministry of Education of China. Founded in 1895, it became one of the largest multidisciplinary engineering universities in China. The Mechanical Engineering Institute is already using nearly 30 CNC machine tools in their workshops.

To complement the machine tools with state-of-the art manufacturing software, the Tianjin University ordered in January 2007 30 licenses of the combined “SolidWorks+SolidCAM” solution. They will be used for the training in the classrooms and laboratories to demonstrate the process of toolpath creation with SolidCAM, based on the 3D CAD mainstream platform SolidWorks. The installation is supported by SolidCAM´s reseller Tianjin Qichen Company.

  • How CAM works inside CAD
  • The MACHINE DESIGN magazine published the experience of a SolidCAM user, James Thompson, the Vice President at AED in Ft. Collins (Colorado). As SolidCAM is integrated in SolidWorks, users can not only transfer parts, "but can model complete projects, including machine pad, fixturing, vises, and several nested parts, in one run".

He added "In terms of production efficiency, the software's programmability and ease of use is almost priceless. Users need only send a model through SolidCAM to the machine tool, set up the material, and hit Go. There's no need to review the G- code or perform a dry run 2 in. above the part to make sure there are no bugs in the programming."

  • SolidCAM exhibits at FORMA TOOL in Slovenia
  • In January 2007 Slovenia was the first Eastern European country to join the Euro currency system. Slovenia`s economy is growing more than average - also thanks to the excellent work of the tool- and moldmaking industry. From April 17-20 this industry will meet at the FORMA TOOL show in Celje, the specialized exhibition for tool and die makers in Slovenia.

SolidCAM Slovenia will demonstrate the new version SolidCAM2007 R11 in Hall L, Booth 02. Jernej Lokovsek, Manager of SolidCAM Slovenia (see photo): "We will team up with the machine tool reseller ESTRA, which is offering Vertical machine centers from Hardford and WireEDM machines from AccuteX. This enables us to show the whole High-Speed machining process live including toolpath creation, machine simulation and cutting the real part. In addition, we will demonstrate the programming of Wire EDM parts for the AccuteX machine."
