Hi Emil,

We just concluded test cutting at a major organization in Southern India. They are heavy users of Competitor CAM software.

Material : Mild Steel 21 HRC

Machine : 11 Year Old HAAS (Gear Driven Spindle , NO HSM Support)

Cutters : Dia 10 End Mill & Dia 12 End Mill 3 Flute from Jabro (SECO)

We finished the entire machining of the part and the General manager and the CAM Programmer felt that the tool paths generated in iMachining are very similar to an option in their current CAM software and that they could prove the same on one of the pockets left by us (We deliberately did not machine it to allow them to test their strategy).

After struggling to program in the Competitor CAM for 2 hours , they came up with a program. They first ran it at a depth of 0.5 mm.

After looking at the cutting at 0.5 mm , the operator of the machine walked out of the CNC room, refusing to run the Competitor CAM generated program, as he believed that the tool would break, resulting in damage to the spindle.

Bypassing the operator , the Programmer started the machine. After about 18 mm ramping (the final depth), when the cutter took the sideward cut, we all noticed something red hot spot inside the cavity…which in matter of 2-3 seconds, before anyone could react, became a mini ball of fire (note the spindle load was hovering at about 95-98 %). In the ball of fire we only heard a thud noise and the machine tripped.

After allowing the smoke to clear ..we saw pieces of the tool & the collet! The programmer was nowhere to be seen.

The general manager accepted that it was a grave mistake in believing his programmer that the competitor CAM had a similar option and accepted that iMachining is very unique.
